Our Top 10 Favorite HR Resources
"We're all in this together". That was 2020's catch-phrase. At times though, that may not have felt all that comforting, especially if you are an HR team of one. You're crusin' along feeling pretty good about your career choice in HR, and then out of the blue you're hit with new legislation, or worse, a pandemic, that you have to navigate on your own. Whether you are a seasoned HR professional or you drew the HR short straw in your company, we have some favorite resources to help you succeed in your role. These are in no particular order, but we do have a soft-spot for the last one if you want to jump ahead.
It's like CNN for HR. You can sign up for daily news alerts, along with other newsletters on various topics like Compliance, Comp & Benefits, and Diversity & Inclusion among others. They have a searchable website to help you find information on a specific subject of interest. If you're feeling ambition or have a little more time to spend reading, you can 'deep dive' into several topics.
The go-to legal eagles on our list. Littler provides updates on federal, state, and local employment legislation. And guess what, you don't need a law degree to decipher the information they provide. Littler also hosts webinars throughout the year on topics ranging from vaccinations in the workplace to new state laws being implemented. If you have an HR certification, these webinars are a great way to get recertification credits.
Federal + State DOL
The Department of Labor (DOL), while not as entertaining as the other resources listed, is the foundation for any HR professional's federal employment knowledge. They have a fact sheet on just about every wage and hour law there is. If you ever want to know whether your intern should be paid or what travel time is considered hours worked, this is your site.
In addition to federal, most states have their own DOL. The more laws generally indicates a more robust state website, like Colorado and California. If you're going it alone and looking for state-specific requirements, this is the best place to start.
An HR professional walks into a bar... Nope, that's not how this story goes. The owner, Sharlyn Lauby says, "I’ve always felt like my colleagues and employees wanted me to act like their neighborhood bartender – that friendly face who’s there when you need them." The outcome was the creation of HR Bartender. She has a menu of blog posts and podcast episodes to keep you sufficiently hydrated.
The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) "is the foremost expert, convener and thought leader on issues impacting today’s evolving workplaces". Having a membership with SHRM gives you access to a whole repository of articles, forms and documents, and general best practice advice. SHRM also offers HR certifications and you do not need to be a member to take the tests. However, you do receive a discount on your test and recertification application if you are a member.
Local HR Chapters
There are professional and university/student HR Chapters across the country that you can join and get involved with. With your membership, you have access to monthly/quarterly meetings, conferences, discounts on events/certifications, and networking opportunities. As you are looking for the right HR Chapter, most will invite you to attend a meeting or event as a guest.
Just about every field of interest you might have, has a dedicated group in that field, including HR. There are groups on LinkedIn and Facebook, and even Instagram has some HR specific accounts to follow.
HR Colleagues + Friends
Maybe you're not necessarily a #teamofone and have an HR team member sitting next to you that you can bounce ideas off. Or you met some friends you keep in touch with from an HR conference (ah, remember in-person conferences?). HR colleagues and friends make for good resources, and you probably connected with them for a reason.
